Adventure Time Mini-Comic writer Bryce Carlson talks about his Halloween memories, plans, costumes and what to expect in the free, fun-filled mini-comic!

HCF: What can we expect to see in terms of story and art in your Halloween ComicFest title?Article Image

Bryce Carlson (BC): You can expect to see a weird, humorous nightmare of an ADVENTURE TIME story that focuses on one of my favorite supporting character from the series, Starchy, with art by Frazer Irving that is completely unexpected and beautifully blends elements of comedy and horror. There's also classic PEANUTS fun that's about as perfect as it gets for the Halloween season along with some awesome JIM HENSON'S FRAGGLE ROCK action. The stories are all super fun and the art is top-notch across the board.

HCF: What is your favorite part about your comic?
BC: The mustaches, of course, but also that the mustaches get to stand shoulder to shoulder with Charles Schulz and Jim Henson creations. I would have killed for a collection like this when I was growing up.

HCF: Tell HCF fans why they should pick up your comic first during the event.
BC: It's very rare that you get to pick up a comic that includes stories from ADVENTURE TIME, PEANUTS, and JIM HENSON'S FRAGGLE ROCK all in one complete package so I imagine it's going to move quickly. Also, the ADVENTURE TIME story, "Secret 'Stache" won't be collected for a while so this is the only chance to get that story if you didn't pick it up last year in the ADVENTURE TIME 2013 SPOOOKTACULAR.Article Image

HCF: What is your favorite Halloween memory?
BC: One year in high school, I bought a big, furry dog suit like the one from Dumb and Dumber and wore it all day and all night. I drove it in, shredded at the skate park in it, and even went on a coffee date in it. That was a rad Halloween.

HCF: What has been your worst and best Halloween costume?
BC
: My worst Halloween costume... I did a pretty weak Walter from The Big Lebowski one year. You know it's not a good costume when you have to explain it 90% of the time. My best Halloween costume is a toss up between when I went as Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High and last year. Let's go with last year since I have a photo of that one. My wife and I went as Gertie and Elliot from E.T. complete with our favorite alien in the bike basket.Article Image

HCF: What is a Halloween tradition you have?
BC: Rather than go out on Halloween night, my wife and I have a longstanding tradition of watching a curated selection of horror movies at home.

HCF: What are you going to do for Halloween?
BC: I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of dancing...

HCF: What other titles would you associate with your HCF book? “If a comic readers likes____, they should pick up my title?”
BC: If you dig, ADVENTURE TIME, PEANUTS, and/or JIM HENSON'S FRAGGLE ROCK, this book has them all!

HCF: Do you have any favorite Halloween, Monster or Horror themed comics?
BC: I love me some TOMB OF DRACULA and BATMAN & DRACULA: RED RAIN, and of course THE WALKING DEAD and FATALE. DAY MEN has been my favorite new take on the vampire genre and THE EMPTY MAN is one of the best new horror series I've read in years. My all-time favorite is still UZUMAKI by Junji Ito -- I was ecstatic that VIZ put out the complete collection last year.

HCF: Are there any comics that you are looking forward to getting on HCF or in the near future?
BC: Really looking forward to DEEP STATE, Justin Jordan's new book with artist Ariela Kristantina, and Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' THE FADE OUT.

HCF: Any teasers about upcoming books or who you might be working with next?
BC: The week of Halloween you can also pick up HIT: PEN & INK #1, which collects the first 2 issues of my original crime series, HIT, and features artist Vanesa R. Del Rey's gorgeous uncolored art in an over-sized 11" x 17" format. Also, there will be news later this year about something else Vanesa and I are doing together...
